DB2/400 TOPS DBMS COMPUTERWORLD SURVEY AS/400 customers in a recent Computerworld
customer satisfaction survey ranked DB2/400 much higher than Informix,
Microsoft, Oracle, and Sybase customers rated their database management
systems (DBMS). The latest results from the weekly publication's quarterly
survey reinforces overall satisfaction for the AS/400 and for IBM, which
would have topped the general vendor ratings in Computerworld's first report
had the RS/6000 not been included. On a scale of 1 to 5 (where 5 represents
"completely satisfied"), DB2/400 ranked a whopping 4.17. "Nothing
came close to its overall grade -- except for the ratings from other IBM
users who run a mix of DB2 versions," the report says. "DB2/400
dusted the competition in eight of 10 categories." Open system databases
from Microsoft (3.71 overall satisfaction), Informix (3.63), Oracle (3.62),
and Sybase (3.41) all rated closely for overall satisfaction and in the
categories of software quality, service/support, and reliability. Despite
Microsoft's overall satisfaction grade over Informix and Oracle, the report
says Microsoft is "less than stellar in scalability and extremely
weak in transaction processing." The report also finds it remarkable
that after several years of user demand for more open systems, a highly
proprietary system nails the highest marks in the customer satisfaction
survey. That's not news, however, to AS/400 users!
